Brian's surviving the triple digit heat and having a good time checking out EAA Airventure in Oshkosh this week. A couple of his highlights include getting to tour a Grumman Mallard (he dreams of owning a Grumman seaplane, hint hint for Christmas ideas!) and riding across the grounds in a half-track truck. How cool is that!!
Oh, and he learned that wine can cause a headache the next morning... hmm.

Brian has headed off to a week-long vacation/volunteer time at EAA Airventure in Oshkosh WI. I had a work contract pop up last minute and gave up my seat so Dan Sokolowski could hitch a ride to OSH Saturday morning. Since the RV-4 cruises at about the same speed, Matthew and Amy flew formation with the guys there. Some storms showed on the radar, but fortunately, their flight was smooth and uneventful.
This week's posts may be spotty as I'll relay any pictures and stories I receive. I know their highlight at OSH yesterday was getting a tour of the grounds in a half-track truck. How cool is that?!?

Big news! Matthew "Merlin" Sawhill soloed the stock Stearman this weekend. The open cockpit was a change of pace from his streamlined RV-4 and green Cessan 140. A big congrats to Merlin... What's next, soloing a P-51???

On Saturday, Roger and Janet Stewart hosted their first (of hopefully an annual event) corn boil picnic/potluck on their grass strip northeast of Bondurant. After watching storm clouds build and then dissipate, we flew over there in the tri-champ, with Matthew and Amy Sawhill in their Cessna 140, and Dan Sokolowski in his Citabria, off our wings. Over a dozen planes made it into the event, which had been promoted only by word-of-mouth (and our blog, thanks to Dave Kalwishky). The corn was absolutely delicious and the company was great. A perfect weekend fly-in!
For those in central Iowa, there's an informal fly-in at a private strip northeast of Bondurant. We've buzzed this strip a few times and look forward to stopping by. The Stewarts have also been to the Blakesburg fly-in, so some of you may have met them as well. Here are the details from Dave Kalwishky:
On Saturday July 14th at 5 pm Roger Stewart is having a fly-in at his farm strip in Bondurant (where he bases his 172). He’ll have fresh sweet corn out of the field cooking for us to enjoy. If you’d like to bring yourself a picnic dinner and something to drink to go with your corn, then by all means do so. If you have a bag chair that you can bring, please do. Everyone is welcome.

The pilot at low level had no control over his aircraft.
It narrowly misses a crowd gathered for the air show and slams into four buildings.
One can only imagine the horror of the occupants inside those buildings.
No one was killed, but it probably scared the crap out of them.
Whew! What a week. While the heat held us back from flying as much as we wanted, the week was jam-packed with activities: a fly-in weekend to Table Rock, fantasy flights, aerobatic instruction, Stearman flight instruction, hosting out-of-town friends, and enjoying an Independence Day BBQ. Needless to say, we're ready for another week off already to catch up!
Oh, and we've made the hard decision to not host a corn boil this year. Time has gotten away from us, and we didn't think we had the time (or energy) to pull off the fly-in lunch with the flair it deserves. So, we have set a hard date for July 4, 2013, as the first annual Half-Fast Independence Day fly-in lunch. Most everyone gets the holiday off, and for those who are in the area, we thought a potluck and fly-in would be fun.
